Fighting the Stigma of Mental Illness

Suicide has increased (largely due to the prolonged poor economic conditions) [Medical News Today]

90%+ of those who die by suicide have a diagnosable mental illness. [National Institute of Mental Health]

One out of five people are dealing wth a mental illness in any given year… this means that

EVERYBODY KNOWS SOMEBODY who is living with a mental illness!

Of the 20% living with a mental illness, many haven not received any treatment largely due to the stigma!

One can Imagine if this is the case in the west, How will it be in a country like India, My work with people with mental illness & disabilities in the rural and Urban slums of India brings me closer to the reality of the suffering lot of people with mental illness both from serious social stigma and poverty and lack of services to meet the growing population, people still go back to traditional practices.There are a large number of people wandering in the streets as homeless and without an identity and they die.
